Inner peace and Buddhism

Like in any other religions, Buddhism is also characterized by the importance of inner peace in its practitioners. That is exactly why the ambassador of peace Prem Rawat said that wherever you go, the main concern of people is to find peace.

Besides, the peace mediator makes it clear in his teachings that peace is within each individual; yet, it is essential that they learn how to discover their potential and inner strengths from a kind of meditation that he calls "Knowledge". In this article, discover how inner peace is viewed in Buddhism.

Finding inner peace through detachment

In Buddhism, inner peace or peace of mind is equal to equanimity. In other words, if an individual manages to control their desires, they will be able to attain peace within. Buddhism believes that craving induces dukkha; therefore, it is essential to detach oneself from all longings.

Mind tranquility is attained once the mind is detached from any yearnings or passions mental state where you can detach from all the passions, from all needs, including the necessity to live. In brief, the teachings of Buddhism maintain that if they can free themselves from any desire of the heart, they can achieve a state of transcendent bliss which will eventually ensure well-being.

Three principles to the attainment of inner peace

Buddhist teachings about peace of mind is attained through three major principles: 

  • Renunciation, which is the main duty of the Hinayana 
  • Compassion, in which the Mahayana is involved
  • Wisdom which is based on Emptiness, which is the aim of the Vajrayana teachings

Attaining inner peace through renunciation

The path of abandonment is when an individual starts to search for happiness within. At this stage, they learn to gradually renounce from finding happiness from the world.

However, it does not involve rejecting the world. In fact, it consists of having each individual take care of themselves. It requires many efforts to renounce to worldly happiness. The six paramitas or virtues are the paths to inner tranquility which makes it possible for each individual to fulfill this objective.

Making sure that one's house is in order

Here, house is not the place where they live; instead, house refers to the individual's mind. Therefore, bringing order in the house is making sure that the mind is in harmony. Each individual's mind is the mansion where they live. It is crucial that they refrain from dualistic mind because that is considered disorderly.

Therefore, it is essential to clear the mind from any hypermentation, which involves worrying about the past or the future, in order to attain inner peace.

Compassion leads to mind tranquility

Compassion or Mahayana is the second leading factor to inner peace. The essence is that compassion induces happiness. Compassion helps us to deprive ourselves of our selfish natural characteristics. It is hard to become a kindhearted individual. Therefore, by being empathetic and generous, it is possible to attain peace within.

Emptiness and Wisdom enhance inner tranquility

The third path to serenity is wisdom and emptiness of all phenomena, especially the desolation of the self. This state is gained through vipashyana and other advanced meditations, for example by practicing Mahamudra and Dzog Chen.

It is crucial for an individual to train their mind to emptiness, which causes much suffering and by suffering much, it is believed that they can attain mind tranquility.
